Our key Curriculum coverage in our base

Maths

In our base we learn through a range of provision and focused activities.

We have access to numbers, shapes and sizes in our continuous and enhanced provision. We do lots of counting as part of our play, routines and music sessions. We have a Maths area in our classroom but this does not mean we are limited to learning Maths in this area, we do lots of exploring of more and less and measuring in our sensory trays and water tray.

We explore days of the week and routines each day, we use lots of songs to help the transition between times of the day such as lunch-time and home-time.We also enjoy focused activities that enable us to develop our skills and knowledge. These activities are based on individual targets and next steps to support our individual needs.

Phonics

In our base we learn through a range of experience linking to our personal Phonics journey.

We are all at different stages in our phonics journey, we use letters and sounds to support our learning.

We also do a lot of work around our environmental sounds and through our music activities especially with rhythm. We explore music daily through songs and continuous provision, we also have weekly music sessions. We use a lot of sounds in our play and during our Intensive Interaction session too!

Literacy

In our base we learn through lots of different ways! We enjoy mark making in sensory media including, dry oats, coloured rice, cornflour and pasta! We also enjoy using paints, ICT, pens chalks and bingo dabbers to make lots of colourful marks! We are developing making making skills through big and small movements.

We do lots of finger gym activities such as threading and play-doh to help develop our fine motor skills and hand eye coordination.

We use a range of provision to enhance and develop our gross motor skills and balance, such Yoga balls, balance boards and climbing equipment.

Reading

In our base we learn through using different areas in class and around school.

We enjoy to look at books - both independently and with adults, in class and in the Library.

We use symbols throughout our learning to communicate preferences as well as to understand where we are and where we are going. We use symbols to make choices during activities and to help us describe things we see in books.

We track lights, images and other objects as part of PE, Outdoor play, Light and Sound activities and ICT as well as in many other areas of learning. This helps us develop our early reading skills as well as concentration and focus skills.

In South Africa we enjoy sensory stories and interactive stories. We have access to a range of text and books in our book area as well a variety of props and characters from stories.
