Students, Volunteers and Work Experience

We are proud to be a supportive and inclusive special school where every young person is encouraged to achieve their full potential. We welcome students, volunteers and work experience who share our commitment to providing outstanding educational experiences for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Placements provide the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while learning from experienced professionals in a specialist educational setting.

Student placements

We welcome placements from:

  • University students.
  • Teacher trainees.
  • Health and social care students.
  • Medical students.
  • Psychology, speech and language, occupational therapy and nursing students.
  • College students with an interest in SEND.

Work experience

We welcome applications from secondary-school students who are interested in gaining experience of working in a special-school environment.

Work experience placements should normally be arranged through the student’s secondary school. The school can then contact us to discuss whether a suitable placement is available.

Placements may be suitable for students who are interested in careers such as:

  • Teaching and education
  • Special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)
  • Childcare and youth work
  • Health and social care
  • Psychology
  • Speech and language
  • Occupational therapy
  • Administration and school support

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers make an invaluable contribution to our school community. Opportunities may include:

  • Supporting classroom activities.
  • Reading and communication sessions.
  • Assisting with educational visits and special events.
  • Supporting play, sensory and life-skills activities.
  • Helping with clubs and enrichment activities.

What You Will Gain

During your placement, you may:

  • Observe teaching and learning across the school.
  • Support pupils during classroom activities.
  • Learn about SEND and inclusive education practices.
  • Experience multidisciplinary working with teachers, therapists, and support staff.
  • Develop professional skills including communication, teamwork, and safeguarding awareness.

Placement Expectations

All students and volunteers are expected to:

  • Be punctual and reliable.
  • Dress appropriately and professionally.
  • Follow school policies and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Treat pupils, staff, and visitors with respect.
  • Follow safeguarding and health and safety guidance.

Safeguarding

As a school committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All work-experience students must follow our school safeguarding, confidentiality, behaviour and visitor procedures.The arrangements and checks required will depend on the student’s age, the nature of the placement and the activities they will undertake.

All student placements and volunteers must have an enhanced DBS.
